| COLORS CHANGE OUR LIVES |

Sun is the source of light and heat to sustain life on our planet ‘earth’. This is the reason Sun is treated as ‘God’ in ancient Greek and Hindu scriptures. Sunlight appears to be in gold color but it contains 7 different colors visible to us. They are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. These colors exist at different wavelengths starting from 380 nm to 740 nm.

-I bow before Sun God, who rides on a chariot of 7 horses (7 colors of Sunlight) and who appears in brightest light sitting in a white lotus (white light).

Astrology is called ‘Jyothisha’ (related to light) and it studies the effects of celestial light on the human beings. So, Astrology gives prime importance to Sun who is the giver of light and the other planets which reflect that light.

According to Einstein’s formula E = mc2, energy can be converted into mass. When mass vibrates at the speed of light, then it is again converted back into energy. We can understand mass and energy are nothing but two different sides of the same coin. Where ever mass is there, it can also have some energy associated with it. Since we delve in our physical body which has some mass, we should understand that there is some energy also within us.

If we take different colors, they will have different wavelengths associated with them. When wavelength is less, the energy will be more. For example Violet color has less wave length when compared to that of other colors like Yellow or Red. So, Violet color has more energy than that of other colors. Since colors are also nothing but energies, they definetely influence our body and mind.

Effect of light on human beings:

98% of Sunlight enters our body through our eyes and remaining 2% enters through our skin. We receive light during day time from Sun and the light emanated from Sun is reflected by Moon during night time. This is why Astrology relates Sun and Moon as causative planets for eyes and eyesight. There is a nerve that connects the eye with hypothalamus gland located in the brain. Upon receiving light from the eyes, this hypothalamus secretes a hormone called serotonin. During day time, serotonin production will be more as there is more light entering the eyes and stimulating the hypothalamus.

Just a bit above the hypothalamus, almost in the middle of the brain, we got pineal gland. This is in the form of a pea nut of about 1 cm size. Serotonin which is produced in the hypothalamus gets into pineal gland. Within the pineal gland, serotonin in the presence of Hydroxy-indole-O-Methyle Transferase (HIOMT) will produce an enzyme called ‘Melatonin’. More light will reduce the production of HIOMT and hence during day time less quantity of melatonin is produced. During night time, more melatonin will be produced.

Serotonin and Melatonin control the functioning of our body. When more Serotonin is produced in our body, there would be diseases like migraine, headaches, insomnia, hypertensions, schizophrenia, mania, anxiety and impulsive acts of violence and aggression. These diseases can be eliminated by decreasing the Serotonin levels in our body by exposing to less light.

When more Melatonin is produced, we get diseases like depression, Jet-lag and Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). So, these diseases can be controlled by exposing our body to more light or by spending more time in day light. This is the root principle in ‘Chromotherapy’ which is nothing but curing diseases with colors of light. This concept is used by ancient Egyptians, Indians and Chinese to heal various diseases. In modern times, scientists Klotsche and Dinshaw Ghadiali have proved practically that colors can be used to cure more than 120 different types of diseases.

Once the bright light enters the pineal gland, it gets dispersed to other endocrine glands in the body like a spark moving through the nerve fibers. This spark thus stimulates the glands which can be treated as energy centers in the body. These energy centers are also called ‘Chakras’. So, these chakras are responsive to bright light and the colors within it. In Indian yoga practices, each chakra is given a specific color thus emphasizing that the charka is highly responsive to that color. So, when a gland is exposed to a particular color, there will be changes in the hormones produced by that gland. Thus the entire functioning of human body is controlled by colors. Research also confirmed that certain parts of the brain are not only light sensitive but actually respond differently to different wavelengths.

Red color and Root chakra:

Red is considered to be color of the fire. If a person is suffering from introversion, inner fear and laziness then Red color can be used to overcome these tendencies. Red will increase dynamic nature, courage, anger and quickness. Red can be used to cure anemia, asthma, diseases of the larynx, certain skin diseases and chronic coughs.

Red is the color associated with Root chakra (Mooladhara chakra) which is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is associated with gonads. Gonads represent ovaries in females and testis in males. Gonads regulate the activities of the genital organs and reproductive potentials.

Orange color and Sacral chakra:

Since Orange color induces optimism, it can be used to treat mental illness, depressions, discontent and pessimism. Orange could be applied for the treatment of arteriosclerosis, cardio sclerosis, loss of appetite, anemia, anorexia and digestive system discomforts (e.g., flatulence, cramps).

Sacral chakra (Swaadhistana chakra) is the second chakra located slightly above the Root chakra at pelvis area. Orange is the color related to Sacral chakra which is related to pancreas. The pancreas is also part of the body's hormone-secreting system. The pancreas produces two important hormones, insulin and glucagon. They work together to maintain a steady level of glucose, or sugar, in the blood and to keep the body supplied with fuel to produce and maintain stores of energy.

Yello color and Solar plexus:

Yellow color is applied when trying to combat glandular diseases and diseases of the lymphatic system, and to strengthen the nervous system.

Yellow influences Solar plexus (Manipoora chakra) which is the third chakra located just above the belly button and represents adrenals. Adrenals produce hormones that influence or regulate salt and water balance in the body, the body's response to stress, metabolism, the immune system, and sexual development and function.

Green color and Heart chakra:

Green improves the memory power and intelligence. Hence it is very affective for dull students. Green is applied for the treatment of bronchitis, whooping cough, inflammations of the joints, and swellings. In addition, green is thought to have a positive influence on the treatments of cysts, eye diseases and diabetes, generally promoting the secretion processes.

Green color influences Heart chakra (Anaahata chakra) which is located at thymus. Thymus contains the power required for the growth and development of the embryo.

Blue color and Throat chakra:

Blue is claimed to profoundly calm and relax us. So, it is applied for rheumatism, arthritis, headaches and migraines, the pains of stomach, muscle cramps, and even liver disorders.

Throat chakra (Visudha chakra) is associated with thyroid gland. Its color is blue. The thyroid gland is present inside the throat.  It plays a major role in maintaining mental stability and development of one’s nature. It helps kids and teens develop strong bones, and play a role in the development of the brain and nervous system in kids.

Indigo color and Third eye:

Indigo is believed to be a cooling color that develops psychic perception and intuition. It is applied in health treatments for eyes, ears, nose, and mental problems. It is also used in attempts to treat addiction. Indigo is also ascribed to have sedative and calming effects.

The region between the eye brows is called ‘Third eye’ (Aajna chakra). This chakra is linked with the pituitary gland and its color is indigo. Brilliance or sharpness of intellect, enthusiasm, sentiments of love and affection, power of self-restraint are generated and controlled by this gland. It also regulates the growth of the body. This tiny gland governs the transitions associated with puberty, youth and reproductive potentials, too.

Violet color and Crown chakra:

Violet is the color of the emotions and is considered to be a meditative color. In color therapy and in particular in color acupuncture, violet is applied for treating the lymphatic system and the spleen. Violet is also used in attempts to soothe organs, relax muscles, and calm the nervous system.

Crown chakra (Sahasraara chakra) is located at the top of the head and associated with pineal gland. The pineal gland is tiny like the tip of a pin - is located in the brain.  This is associated with mental and spiritual development. This chakra is also regarded as the source of receiving divine light and knowledge.  Contact with extraterrestrial beings, ghosts and divine spirits is believed to take place through the crown chakra.

Using colors:

To use a particular color for our advantage, we can use opaque light bulb of that color. Suppose a person is suffering from rheumatism. He should keep a blue color bulb of 100W at a distance of around 10 to 12 inches from the knee joints and expose the joints with blue color continuously for 20 to 30 minutes. This should be done daily for 3 times. This will help him to slowly get rid of rheumatism.

Similarly, if we want to improve the intellectual power of our children, we should use green color curtains in the children’s bed room and the walls should be painted in green. Using a green opaque bulb of Zero watt as bed lamp will also help them to receive the full potential of green color during the entire sleep. Such children will fare very well in their education.

People who are feeling loneliness and depression can use orange colored bed lamp to develop optimism. They should use orange color curtains and glasses in their rooms to develop cheerful attitude towards life. On the other hand, people with tensions, body pains and sleeplessness can use blue color bed lamps and blue color curtains to get relief. Similarly, people who do meditation, mantra recitation and such spiritual practices can use Violet color in the room to get the results quickly.
